William and Anne decided to come to America in 1818. First to New York, then to Philadelphia where an Uncle Joseph Sinton was very kind to them. They then went to Buffalo, New York and ended up in Collins, New York. When the Quakers' split up in the U.S., they became Hicksite Quakers. William O'Brien was trained as a cabinet maker in a large estabishment in London, and was never really suited to be a farmer.

They were discriminated against because the "Know Nothing Party" thought all Irish were Catholics. When William died in 1849 of typhoid fever, Anne talked her sons into using the Sinton name because of "Uncle Sinton" and because no one knew it was Irish. Their sons changed their name officially in 1854.

It was to them that the old Irish letters were written. These letters were sent to Ronald Greeves early in the 1940's, who typed them and returned them to Colorado where the remaining ones now are. (Tutt Library, Colorado College, and Penrose Public Library, both in Colorado Springs).

Although they deal mostly with the Irish relations, the very difficult life Anne and William were leading is reflected in comments about their letters to Ireland. Their history and doings, and those of his descendants, are in the letters and a different file, names and odds and ends only in this file.
